About Chunxiang’s Schoolroom Prank
Discover one of China’s most charming stage traditions in Chunxiang’s Schoolroom Prank, a lively Kunqu comedy full of wit, elegance and playful chaos. This production brings classical Chinese opera to the Fringe in a fresh, joyful and accessible way. Cheeky, clever Chunxiang turns a strict schoolroom upside down with sharp humour, quick timing and irresistible comic energy. Live singing, graceful movement and rhythmic dialogue create a vibrant world where tradition meets contemporary theatrical flair. The show also features the refined artistry of male dan performance, a classical cross-gender technique adding expressive beauty and a rare glimpse into the imaginative gender traditions of early Chinese theatre. This is an ideal introduction to Kunqu for newcomers and a treat for lovers of world theatre. Performed in traditional Chinese operatic vocal with Chinese and English surtitles. Workshops are also offered, an opportunity to explore Kunqu up close, details via Rotunda theatre.
